Experienced and Knowledgeable Ohio CPD Lawyer
Lancione & Lancione, PLL, is a well-established Cleveland law firm serving the victims of birth injury and their families. Many of the cases we handle involve medical malpractice related to cephalopelvic disproportion (often called CPD). We help Ohio families affected by CPD-related malpractice recover compensation for the harm they experienced.
About Cephalopelvic Disproportion (CPD)
Cephalopelvic disproportion occurs when a baby's head or body is too large to fit through the mother's pelvis or birth canal during labor. According to the American College of Nurse Midwives, CPD occurs in about one out of every 250 pregnancies, making it one of the most common causes of labor complications.
It is a serious medical condition that can lead to prolonged labor and fetal distress, causing serious injuries to mothers and infants. These include oxygen deprivation, respiratory distress and even death.
There are several possible factors that can lead to CPD, including the ones listed below:
- Babies that are larger than normal due to hereditary factors or diabetes
- Prolonged pregnancies that have been allowed to continue long past the due date
- Abnormal fetal positions
- Women with small or abnormally-shaped pelvises
CPD is rarely diagnosed during pregnancy, but ultrasounds and physical examinations can help predict the likelihood of problems. When labor does not progress normally, doctors and other medical providers should watch for the signs of CPD and act accordingly.
Doctors may choose to perform a cesarean section (c-section) or to take other actions according to the standard of care. Doctors who fail to recognize CPD, fail to take action that prevents injury or stimulate labor despite CPD may be committing medical malpractice.
At Lancione & Lancione, PLL, we are dedicated to holding doctors accountable, by filing medical malpractice claims in Ohio courts, for the harm they cause. Our Cleveland law firm combines the work of a team of committed attorneys.
