2 Young Adults Die in Football Games in Kansas, Ohio

The Lancione Law Firm

As a parent, your worst nightmare would be for your child to get hurt or killed doing something that’s supposed to be a fun activity. Unfortunately, even the most exciting sports can be very dangerous for children. This has proved true in Ohio and Kansas, where two boys have now died. The two football players, both under the age of 18, died from injuries they suddenly suffered while playing football. According to a news report, one, the 9-year-old, may have had a pre-existing condition of the heart, which resulted in him collapsing and passing away when he was taken to the hospital.

The other, a 17-year-old student, was playing on his team when he was tackled by the opposing team. He got up and ran to the sidelines, but there he collapsed. When he was taken to the hospital, it was discovered that he had suffered a traumatic brain injury. The injury was so severe that it had caused his brain to swell to the point of cutting off oxygen and blood flow to the brain.

Injuries like these two boys suffered can be caused by impacts or even just the strain of such a physical game. In at least the situation with a brain injury involved, parents and families of students hurt or killed can seek out compensation through the insurance carriers covering students at the events.

If an event is too strenuous or negligence is involved — for instance, if a child had complained about pain but wasn’t allowed to stop practicing or playing in the game to receive medical care — then a family could choose to pursue a claim against the team or school that is liable for that child’s care.
