Are birth injuries decreasing?

On behalf of The Lancione Law Firm | Sep 21, 2020 | Birth Injury

Birth injuries present a number of serious concerns for mothers, newborns, fathers and other family members. From physical pain and financial hardships to the loss of life, there are many ways in which these injuries turn lives upside down. Moreover, it is important for people to understand the prevalence of these injuries if they are preparing for childbirth. While a majority of people do not have to experience this devastating trauma, many families are devastated by birth injuries in the U.S. each year.

If a birth injury has turned your family’s life on end, you need to take a firm look at your legal options and make sure that you hold medical professionals accountable for any negligence.

Looking at the birth injury rate

According to material that was published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, birth trauma decreased from 2004 to 2012. In 2012, birth trauma occurred at a rate of 1.9 per 1,000 live births, compared to 2004, when birth trauma occurred at a rate of 2.6 per 1,000 live births. A number of factors are associated with a decrease in the number of birth injuries, such as an increase in the number of cesarean deliveries and improved obstetrical techniques.

Looking at the consequences of birth injuries

Birth trauma can result in a number of consequences for mothers and newborns, such as skull fractures, brain hemorrhages and scalp swelling. Nerve damage and spinal cord injuries also occur when problems arise during the delivery process. Aside from the physical toll of birth injuries, many families are overwhelmed by financial hardships and emotional pain as well.
