What does vaginal bleeding during pregnancy mean?

Proper medical care is crucial for a healthy, happy pregnancy. That is why prospective mothers must know the signs of possible issues, so they can seek medical assistance right away should a problem arise.

As explained by the March of Dimes, vaginal bleeding and spotting during pregnancy is not always a cause for worry. In fact, some spotting is common during the early stages of pregnancy and can even result from the natural embryo plantation process. However, it can indicate one of the more serious issues listed here, particularly if it occurs during the later stages of pregnancy.

Miscarriage

Miscarriages often occur spontaneously, but they may also result from a traumatic injury or infection. Bleeding accompanies virtually miscarriages. Cramping typically occurs as well, so these symptoms require immediate assessment by a medical professional.

Ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancies occur when the fertilized egg implants in an area other than the uterus. These births are not viable and require intervention to preserve the life of the mother.

Uterine rupture

While less common than other issues listed here, uterine rupture is a major medical issue that requires immediate emergency treatment. Uterine rupture occurs during labor and often results from damaged scar tissue caused by a previous Cesarean birth or some other type of surgery. Medical staff must work to stop the bleeding to prevent more serious effects and ensure safe delivery.

Preterm labor

Early labor can also result in bleeding during pregnancy. If a woman gives birth prior to her 37th week, it is preterm labor. In addition to jeopardizing the safety of the baby, preterm labor can also pose risks to the mother depending on her health status.

Make sure you attend all regularly scheduled appointments with your gynecologist. You should also reach out to your medical team any time a new symptom arises just to confirm it is not serious.
